How we pick

Spec sheets, owner reports across a full season, and manufacturer documentation — cross-checked. Every pick names who it’s for, and who should skip it.

What we don’t do

No lab, no test-bench theater. We don’t test or handle any product we cover, and every guide says so — plainly.

How we’re paid

Buying through our links earns us a commission at no cost to you. Rankings are never for sale. Read the full disclosure →

Winter feeding starts in October, not December.

Birds scout reliable food and open water weeks before the first freeze. A suet cage and a heated bath, set out early, decide whose yard the chickadees commit to.

Feeder questions, short answers

How far from a window should a bird feeder be?
Within 3 feet of a window or more than 30 feet away — the zone between causes the fastest, hardest window strikes. Cover within about 10 feet gives birds an exit when a hawk sweeps through.
How often should I clean a bird feeder?
Every two weeks with hot soapy water or a 9:1 water-to-bleach soak — weekly in wet weather or heavy traffic. Hummingbird feeders need fresh nectar every 2–3 days in summer heat.
Will birds actually find a new feeder?
Completely. Discovery takes days to a month depending on cover and existing traffic nearby. A shallow water source shortens the wait more than any seed upgrade.
Can I feed suet year-round?
Yes, with two caveats: pause for a couple of weeks if a sick bird shows up, as Cornell Lab’s Project FeederWatch recommends, and skip standard suet once daily highs pass 80°F — switch to a no-melt blend.
